Rick Kissel Note: Fox's "American Idol" kicked off its fifth season with
its best-ever premiere numbers Tuesday night, rising nearly 10% ahead
of last year's score, according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen.

From 8 to 10, "Idol" averaged a whammo 15.2 rating/34 share in
adults 18-49 and 35.4 million viewers overall, making it the highest-rated
primetime entertainment telecast in the demo since the finale of "Friends"
on NBC in May 2004. It beat the other five broadcast nets combined by
an amazing 26% in adults 18-49 (15.3 vs. 12.1), by 108% in teens
(13.7 vs. 6.6) and by 15% in total viewers (35.5 million vs. 31.0 million).

This year's opener came in 9% ahead of last year in 18-49 and 6% better
in total viewers, and it's the second highest-rated "Idol" episode to date
behind the May 2003 season two finale.

The only other Fox entertainment program to ever rate higher in 18-49
was the season finale of short-lived unscripted farce "Joe Millionaire" in
February 2003.

But don't bet them they can't
Take him to the very bottom
Because they made him and they'll waste him
And I don't believe that I want to watch them

Looks like this is the last season for "Fear Factor." It's now being
beaten by WB's Gilmore Girls. NBC should be able to do better than lag
WB in that time slot.

The rerun syndication of "Fear Factor" has effectively killed the
series. The fans of that show generally just care about the gross-out
stunts, not original plotlines. With those stunts viewable for the last
year and a half in daily reruns, there's no special reason left for FF
fans to watch the original episodes.

I would beg to differ with you on that and I'm betting so would the
"fans". I don't watch anything but "first run" episodes of pretty much
any show; especially Fear Factor. However people who might have been
curious but hadn't watched before might watch the syndicated version
instead of the primetime. That would have an effect on ratings.
Additionally...what "plotlines" does FF have? Watch 20/30 somethings
try to get their 15 minutes by doing a stunt, eat/sleep/suffocate in
gross stuff, do another stunt to win? FYI the best episodes are when a
fish out of water person (like mr. threetoes/gap tooth) almost won a
few weeks back.

Nevertheless, you've totally missed point of the person you were
responding to, which is: Gilmore Girls beat Fear Factor. Big Four
shows that lose out to little two shows get cancelled soon thereafter.

What you and the remaining fans of FF have to say about why you like
FF is all fine and good, whatever floats your boat, even if it's
pre-chewed cow rectums, but that's totally beside the point that FF's
ratings have slipped to cancellation level.
